What is a Central Authentication Service?

The UofSC Central Authentication Service is a single sign-on process that allows users to provide their credentials only once, even if they're trying to access multiple sites or applications, such as Self Service Carolina, my.sc.edu, and other commonly used information systems.

How do I sign in?

The UofSC Central Authentication Service supports the use of three login credentials: a Network Username, a VIP ID, or a Blackboard Auxillary ID. Enter the username and its corresponding password in the form on the Login tab.

The VIP ID is an 8 digit number. It can be found in your acceptance letter.

The Network Username is an combination of letters and digits derived from your name; it is assigned by the University. It is also is the first part of your e-mail address.

The Blackboard Auxillary ID is used by individuals who need Blackboard access but who do not have a VIP ID or Network Username. This ID is assigned by the Teaching and Technology Services department.

Who must use the VIP ID to sign-on?

Applicants for admission or new students who have not been through orientation must use their VIP ID.

I've never signed-on before. Where do I find my VIP ID?

Your VIP ID is in your acceptance letter.

How do I set the password for my VIP ID?


I've forgotten my password. How can I reset it?

Who can use the Network Username to sign-on?

Only regularly admitted students, faculty, staff, and affiliates can use the Network Username.

Because of State regulations some applications may require two-factor authentication. You will be prompted for a second (DUO) passcode if necessary. The first time you use an application that requires multi-factor authentication you will be led through a process to associate your mobile device with your Network Username. If you use a VIP ID and two factor authentication is required, you will be prompted for the second authentication factor as if you had used your Network Username.

How long will I stay authenticated?

Until you close your browser or your session expires, whichever comes first. For your security, it's recommended that you close your browser when finished using any web application.
